THANKS FOR YOUR ENERGY, LARRY
That's what I told Larry June after a long-ass photoshoot for a new colorway of his Adidas Adistar Control 5 shoe.
You see, big photoshoots can be either hella stressful or mad boring. They’re usually never just chill.
This one fell into the boring bucket.
Not because of the client, the talent, or the team I was working with. It was an eight-hour shoot, and the video portion was taking foreverrrrr (as it usually does).
Lots of waiting. Lots of the same sh*t.
Getting Paid To Mind My Business
I was on the job as a BTS photographer, which meant I had very little creative input. I was mostly sitting back, watching other creatives do their thing.
And that was probably the hardest part because I love being involved in the creative process.
Don't get me wrong, it's also nice getting paid to be a fly on the wall.
Just gotta remind myself that not every job needs me to be the creative director.
It’s All Energy, Baby.
A client once told me they noticed and appreciated the energy I brought to an event and how I maintained it throughout the day.
That stuck with me because, in my head, I thought that was just the standard (this is my toxic trait lol).
As a photographer, you gotta come with the energy.
You're working with people. Reading the room. Finding moments. Sometimes creating them.
At the end of the day, you gotta do what it takes to get the shot.
And sometimes that means bringing the energy, even when the job isn't giving you much back.
Larry Was Cool As F*ck!
Super laid-back. Funny.
He showed up, did his thing, and kept the same energy throughout the day. That's what I appreciated about him.
And honestly, that's all you can ask for sometimes.
Not every job is gonna be creatively fulfilling. Not every shoot is gonna be exciting. But you can always control what you bring to it.
As we wrapped, I caught a few final frames of Larry before he headed back to his private room.
As he walked past me, I dapped him up and said, “Thanks for your energy today, Larry.”
“It’s all love,” he responded. 🍊
